Our History

Scalford, like other villages in the Melton Borough, once boasted several public houses. In Wright’s Directory of 1894, three pubs are listed: the Black Horse, the Kings Arms, which was originally named the King’s Head and had Mrs. Frances Hall as the landlady, and the Plough, run by Rd. Greaves Pollard.

An early 1900s photograph of the Kings Arms shows a sign with James Watchorn’s name above the entrance, possibly featuring him standing on the inn’s doorstep. In 1894, James and his brother Michael operated the Manor Bakery, serving as Scalford’s baker and miller. Pam Tripp remembers, “In the 1930s, Mr. and Mrs. Seagrave managed the Kings Arms. I celebrated my wedding reception there.”
